A Trulli Wonderful Honeymoon

So we don't generally talk about honeymoons on this old wedding blog, I suppose we should though considering it's the next best thing after the big day! I thought I'd start by showing you, ahem, a few pictures I took from my week away, in Puglia rural southern Italy {the top of the 'heel' in case you were wondering}.

Puglia is just beautiful, how you imagine old rural Italy to be with winding little roads, stunning religious artefacts, rolling countryside and turquoise blue skies. Every view is postcard perfect.

We chose Italy as we'd never been there together, we love Italian food and wine and with us marrying in June it seemed wrong to travel half way around the world when Europe had perfect weather. As usual with our holidays I spent hours researching the place for us to go and when I stumbled across this private villa in Ostuni I knew it was right for us, secluded, beautiful, picturesque and best of all, very reasonably priced :)

 The villa was actually a Trulli which are stone buildings often dating back as far as the 17th century and are recognisable by their conical grey slate roof and whitewashed walls. Ours was pretty much in the middle of nowhere at the end of a dirt track unseen from the road.

In fact, most of the trullis in the area were unseen from the road but if you stood on the roof of one you could see lots of these little cones peeking out from the countryside like merecats hiding amongst the olive groves. We were surrounded by lemon trees, peach trees, figs, olives, grapes although unfortunately we were too early for any of these fruits to be perfectly ripe.
The trulli was stunning, I could not have asked for a more beautifully decorated building to stay in. It was full of understated design furniture, quirky pieces of art which seem to pop up in the most unusual of places.

The interesting thing about this part of Italy is that it is relatively new to tourism and so there are not a huge amount of restaurants or bars, certainly not ones catering for tourists but the local produce is superb and so we surprisingly did a lot of cooking ourselves. The owners of the trulli are themselves Londoners and so had probably expected that their guests would end up doing a lot of their own meals and so provided every type of utensil and knife you might ever need. {Well, when I say cooking I mean fresh pasta {orichiette} and tomatoes, a bit of local dried oregano and plates of antipasti and bruschetta or some local fish on the fire pit. And quite a lot of Puglian red wine. Sublime.}

Outside we were spoilt with a bright blue pool and terrace to relax on. We didn't really move much.

So we ate, drank, went sightseeing, sunbathed and generally relaxed in the sunshine for a week before heading off to Milan for a couple of nights before our flight home, a great way to spend a week away after the whirlwind that is a wedding. I'd love to go back to Southern Italy, next time I think we'll do the pointy toe or the amalfi coast but Puglia will always hold a special place in my heart.
xx

{Our trulli was booked through www.ownersdirect.co.uk and we flew with BA via Gatwick to Brindisi Airport}
